In the year 2023 we were already able to support a survey executed by the Strategic Center of Human Rights on the importance of participation in the upcoming provincial elections. The results of the survey had been summarized in a report and an explanation video. The results had been furthermore discussed in a workshop in Baghdad.

Questionnaire on participation in the upcoming provincial elections

The Strategic Center for Human Rights conducted a questionnaire in October 2023 on the participation of women in the upcoming regional elections. The report can be downloaded here in Arabic language. Interactive Symposium in Baghdad

The role of importance of the political participation of women and youth in the upcoming provincial elections

The Strategic Center for Human Rights in Iraq organized a specialized dialogue on the importance of the participation of women and youth in the upcoming provincial elections on 28 October 2023 at Bloom Hotel in Baghdad.

The Symposium addressed the following topics:

  • Study regarding youth participation after 2003, Speaker: Imad Jamil, Speaker of the Independent High Commission for elections
  • Participation of Women in earlier elections, Speaker: Ms. Kulshan Kamal, former member of the council of commissioners
  • The age of nominees for elections and its impact on participation, speaker: Prof. Hazem Al-Raddini, Vice President of the Strategic Center for Human Rights
  • The Impact of female minimum quotas on election participation, Speaker: Prof. Mohsen Mausouni of the council of former commissioners
  • Proposal to strengthen the political participation of women and youth, Speaker: Dr. ael Monzir, expert on rights and elections

 

The Symposium gave the following recommendations:

  • Empowerment and Support for the youth through strategic programs of the ministries for education, youth and sports
  • Reducing the minimum age for candidates to 25 years by changing the election legislation
  • Strengthening Human Rights in the Curricula of elementary and high schools
  • Establishing a high council for women (a legislative proposal has been put forward to the house of representatives, further debates with women rights movement are important)
  • Support of civil movements to establish long-term programs
